Choosing a beater

What you hit your bass drum with matters. Here is every beater in the shop, grouped by feel, with Jared’s notes from the Dragonfly and Low Boy pages.

Jared on Dragonfly

Dragonfly Percussion has been making mallets for the world's top orchestras for 20 years, and these are the kick drum beaters they brought to the drum set. They're adapted from Viennese-style timpani mallets and built from tightly stacked discs of flannel, canvas, leather and suede. I stock the range in Australia and ship from Victoria, so there's no waiting on overseas freight.

Hard: the Hard Leather is the hardest beater in the range, articulate and punchy with warmth and depth.

Medium: the Medium Canvas is round and bass-y with punch, and the Suede Kick is big and dark with a clear, leathery attack. The Two Tone is a hybrid: soft when you play quietly, punchy when you play loud. For jazz, the Ulysses Owens Jr. Signature is black suede on a light aluminium tube.

Soft: the Soft Flannel is warm and legato. The XL Flannel Kick and Big Softy are bigger and boomier with almost no attack, and the Bop Softy is sized for small 16" to 20" bop kick drums.

Can't decide? The Three Pack gets you the Hard Leather, Medium Canvas and Soft Flannel together.

Also here from Tackle + Dragonfly: Toppers, mallet heads that fit onto the tip of any medium drumstick, and LowTops for flip-stick tricks and silky cymbal swells.

Jared on Low Boy

I stock Low Boy beaters in Australia, and every one is a one-off custom finish, so the beater you see is the exact beater you get. Low Boy beaters are hand finished in California from North American hard maple, on an aerospace-grade chrome-plated steel rod that's guaranteed never to bend or break and fits nearly every bass drum pedal built in the last 100+ years. Price is per beater, so for a double pedal add 2 to your cart.

Which Low Boy?

There are eight types: four striking surfaces, each in a midweight and a lightweight version.

  • Standard and Lightweight: a flat wood face with plenty of power and a light touch. The Standard is 95g. The Lightweight is 80g and Low Boy calls it the world's lightest wood bass drum beater.
  • Felt Daddy and Lightweight Felt Daddy: a hard, flat felt face with the warmth of a round felt beater and extra clarity. 95g or 80g.
  • Leather Daddy and Lightweight Leather Daddy: a flat leather face that sits between wood and felt, a warm smack that is not too hard and not too soft. 95g or 80g.
  • Puff Daddy and Lightweight Puff Daddy: a soft, lush shearling lambswool puff held on by a magnet, so it's replaceable, with a wide dynamic range from whisper quiet to thunderously loud. 100g or 85g.

The midweights give you plenty of power with a light touch. The lightweights are built for speed and control.

Who plays Low Boy

Low Boy artists include Glenn Kotche (Wilco), Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Eric Clapton), Jon Theodore (Queens of the Stone Age), Andy Hurley (Fall Out Boy), Tucker Rule (Thursday, L.S. Dunes) and Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver).

Add the Low Boy Power Switches to change how your pedal feels, or compare with the Dragonfly beaters. Stocked in Australia, ships from Victoria.
