A sketch synthesised in your browser to show what dampening does to a snare’s ring. It’s not a recording of this product.
The Snareweight 70's is a pair of genuine leather inserts for the brass #5, and the most effective way to kill top head overtone ring.
Use them as a pair for the most dampening, or use one on its own, left or right, for less. If the ring is still there, try moving the insert around the hoop. Snareweight says you have a 99% chance of knocking it out.
The 70's also acts like a gate. It opens and closes a bit with the strength of your stick attack, so you don't get a squashed feeling on harder hits. Snareweight calls this "expressive dampening". The drum opens up when you hit harder and is held closer when you play more softly, so you hear the shell and keep the high end.
Tips: the logo side of the leather is harder and slightly less absorptive. Turn an insert upside down, with the logo side against the head, for a bit more brightness. For recording, less dampening and less EQ on the top end of your snare is usually better. You can also point one in toward the middle of the drum, which dampens in a totally different way.
